The average Englishwoman, reared on nothing more erotic in the way of masculine perfume than Imperial Leather and Coal Tar soap, could go limp just reading this. But Rodolphe does not rely on copious sloshes of the old Eau Sauvage alone. He proves to have a superb turn of phrase, plus a terrific romantic dash and assurance. ‘You cannot fight with fate!’ he declares, ‘or resist when the angels smile.’

Finally he comes to take her out riding. He has made himself look stunning in a velvet riding jacket, white breeches, and his finest leather boots. But best of all, the horse he has brought for Emma has been prepared as for a princess, with a side-saddle of softest buckskin, and pink rosettes tucked behind its ears!

Together they ride deep into the heart of the woodland, in ‘a medley of grey and fawn and gold’. Here Rodolphe declares his love with the thrilling question:

Are not our destinies now one?

Like a shy creature of the forest, Emma is startled and or the point of flight. But Rodolphe is gentle and reassuring. Tenderly he builds to a wonderful emotional climax nc woman could resist:

`You are in my heart as a Madonna on a pedestal, lifted high, secure and immaculate . . . Only, I can’t live without you. I need you, your eyes, your voice, your thoughts! Oh, be my friend, my sister, my angel!’ . .

Silence was everywhere. Sweetness seemed to breathe from the trees. She felt her heart beginning to beat again, and the blood flowing inside her flesh like a river of milk . . . Now was her hour of triumph. Love, so long pent up within her, surged forth at last with a wild and joyous flow, and she savoured it without remorse, disquiet or distress.

Isn’t that glorious? To fall into the arms of love, and in the very heart of nature, too. There’s something uniquely wonderful about a passionate affaire du coeur, all for love and the world well lost. It’s an experience every woman owes herself. Even if it ends in tears, you have known what it is to scale the heights, a secret known only to a few. And you can always say to yourself those brilliant, rueful, forgiving words of Browning:

Rodolphe is of course the ideal seducer, handsome, rich, sexy and unmarried. But unhandsome, unsexy, unrich and unsingle men need not despair. It ain’t what you are, it’s the way that you are it, as Theodore Dreiser shows in his epic novel, Jennie Gerhardt.

Jennie is both lovely and vulnerable, which attracts the attention of more than one admirer. But her men, though not Rodolphes, are not the heartless villains of the stereotype seducer, Victorian-style. They are warm, they are loving, and they care about her. Dreiser puts in a plea for the surrender to this love, that must strike a whole hallelujah chorus of chords for men and women alike:

From all enchanted things of earth and air, this preciousness has been drawn . . . A hundred years of cowslips, bluebells,

violets; purple spring and golden autumn; sunshine, shower and dewy mornings; the night immortal; all the rhythm of time unrolling. A chronicle unwritten and past all power of writing; who shall preserve a record of the petals that fell from the roses a century ago? . . .

If you have understood and appreciated the beauty of harebells three hundred times repeated; if the quality of the roses, of the music, of the ruddy mornings and evenings of the world has ever touched your heart; if all beauty were passing, and you were given these things to hold in your arms before the world slipped away —

would you give them up?
