Oh maiden, let your distaff be,
And pace the flowery meads with me, And 1 will tell you lies . . .
Oh follow me where love is flown, Into the leafy woods alone,
And I will work you ill.
Once upon time, long ago and far away, men didn’t just up and out with it. They expected to have to court the chosen lady, to flatter, to persuade, to beat down a real resistance. They had to stoke up the fires of passion if they hoped to build up a head of steam. Every man knew that no self-respecting woman would drop her drawers for him on sight, no matter how badly he was giving her ants in the pants. In those days a man had to learn how to woo and to wait if he wanted to work his wicked way with you — in other words, to seduce.
Seduction is a dying art, like everything else that was invented before telephones, trains and planes. In today’s world, the pace of modern life doesn’t permit it. If there’s only six hours between flights, that’s all the time you’ve got to have lift-off with the dreamy guy you’ve been pretending not to look at all the way from New York. Sure, he could be a champion miler or even a marathon man, given time and encouragement and a following wind. But the time factor makes it a sprint, baby, and you don’t want to be jumping up and down on the starting-line while he’s deciding, ‘This is not my distance’.
The art of the seduction is closely allied to the art of the proposal. The secret is to make a woman want to so much, that nothing in the world would stop her from saying yes. In these circumstances the true artist shines to his full advantage. A friend of mine confessed how the care and flair of a man she‘d never really noticed before really won her over.
He had asked her to go for a day by the sea, and had obviously taken pains with the arrangements. He’d hired an open-top sports car, fixed a big hamper, and all that. But it wasn’t the smart car, the super picnic, the dinner afterwards with soft lights and sweet music that seduced her. It was the fact that when he called for her in the car, on the passenger seat lay a chiffon scarf that he had bought specially so that the wind wouldn’t ruin her hair. This one touch of thoughtfulness went straight to her heart and made her his, and when she melted into his arms later that night, she was still wearing the chiffon, if nothing else.
As with all artists, it’s a pleasure to watch them work. The first step for the seducer is to arouse a woman’s interest, usually by presenting himself as a sensitive plant that the world has bruised in some mysterious way. This can be used by women too, and it works like a charm for the heroine of The French Lieutenant’s Woman. It is used again by Rodolphe in his seduction of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary.
Rodolphe has been deeply struck by the heroine’s pale face and dark eyes at first sight. But she is sexually unawakened, despite the fact that she is married to a
Boorish country doctor. How to rouse a Sleeping Beauty? Rodolphe begins with a passionate declaration that some souls are destined by fate to love. He makes a profound impact upon Emma Bovary:
She saw little gleams of gold playing about his dark pupils. She was near enough to him to smell the cream on his glossy hair. She felt limp . . .
