A midweek matinee, just you and your wife, munching on Gummy Bears and popcorn while the rest of civilization toils away at its labors.

Sacrifice some Zzzs. Spouses who work different shifts have an especially tough row to hoe. But if each of you is willing to give up a little sleep, you can snag some quality time together.

“Your wife picks a night to stay up and watch Letterman with you while you unwind from work; maybe you share a bottle of wine. Conversely, you get up early one morning with her and relax together over coffee. By planning in advance, it gives both partners something to look forward to.”

Make a date. “One night a week, without fail, my wife and I have a scheduled date night,” says Moore. “It can be as simple as window-shopping at the mall, or as elaborate as an overnight stay at a bed-and-breakfast.” The point, he says, is to stick to it faithfully. You don’t indiscriminately skip out on appointments and meetings at work just because you’re feeling jammed up, so don’t cancel your dates either.
