Honeymoon checklist

Along with a vat of sun cream and far too many clothes for just seven days, make sure you take the following:
- valid 10-year passports: some countries won’t accept passports that have less than six months left on them
- travel insurance
- local currency, including a few small notes for taxi drivers and tips on arrival
- a first-aid kit with basics such as insect repellent, paracetamol, plasters and so on.
If your bride is changing her name you will need to plan this into your honeymoon departure date. Things can get complicated, particularly in this climate of heightened security, and if the name on her boarding pass and passport don’t match up it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get on the plane. It may be simpler to book everything in her maiden name and sort out changing documents once you are back from the honeymoon.
Freebies
Is it actually possible to get upgraded to first class and plied with free champagne just because you are newlyweds? Frankly, it’s worth a try and if you don’t ask you definitely won’t get. Make it clear to your tour operator at the time of booking that this is your honeymoon and also mention it to the reception staff when you get to your hotel. Arrive early at the airport, making sure you are looking presentable, and you never know your luck. If you are a bit shy about telling your hotel you are honeymooners, get someone in your family or a friend to call up and have a word with them as a `surprise’ for you. If you don’t want the stress of trying to wangle a free upgrade you can often pay a little extra simply to use the Business Class lounges of most airlines, which should guarantee you slightly more luxurious surroundings while you wait for your flight.
